A Couture Bridal Collection
Original Intent
Original Intent is a bespoke couture bridal collection that highlights the lived experiences of the most influential women in Genevieve’s life—her mother, maternal figures, and close friends—and their evolving relationships with marriage, questioning a tradition of bridal fashion rooted in a time when marriage was primarily economic rather than emotional. This disconnect is reflected in works like The Unequal Marriage and After the Marriage, where marriage appears as sorrowful and restrictive, echoing her mother’s experience of being valued more for her role as a wife than as an individual. Which informed the concept of “marriage prey,” expressed through a fawn motif symbolizing vulnerability and objectification, paired with form-fitting garments and layered lace to reveal the complexity beneath the bridal ideal.
Drawing on the symbolism in After the Marriage, where unbloomed and decaying flowers suggest unrealized potential and lost agency, the collection ultimately shifts toward contemporary self-definition, incorporating collaborative design and embroidered “toile notes” that highlight the wearer’s identity, reframing the bride as a woman reclaiming authorship over her life rather than embodying a passive ideal.
