Bio

Joanne Setiawan is an artist and designer from Jakarta, Indonesia, currently based in New York. With a foundation in fine arts, her practice explores the sense of self through themes of quietness and solitude, often drawing from personal memories as a primary material. Her work challenges conventional notions of fluidity and calm, reconfiguring them into something more layered and unresolved. Influenced by her upbringing in Indonesia, her approach to silhouette, texture, and embellishment reflects a nuanced interplay between cultural memory and contemporary form.

I hold on for dear life

“When the real is no longer what it used to be, nostalgia assumes its full meaning.” - Jean Baudrillard

‘I Hold On for Dear Life’ unfolds within a garden that once wrapped around my grandfather’s house. Though it no longer exists, its warmth, sense of safety, and quiet companionship remain. I return to it as a kind of sanctuary. It was a space shaped by companionship and innocence. I no longer recall the exact paths; the memory flickers, partial, fragile. It is within this in-between state that the collection resides: between holding on and letting go.

The work lingers in this moment of transition. A search for love, companionship, and belonging, a desire to be fully understood, without performance. We often seek resolution, but when reality settles, what remains is not certainty, but its echo. What endures is a nostalgia for something that once felt whole, even as the real has quietly shifted beyond reach.
