Ka Wai Wu
Bio
Ka Wai Wu, is an emerging Chinese fashion designer from the Dominican Republic whose biggest aspiration is to be recognized as one of the first Chinese-Dominican designers in her home country. Her work represents a dual cultural identity, sharing a unique perspective that bridges both worlds. Driven by the belief that there is no such thing as a "perfect" muse, Ka Wai focuses on creating for every living body type. Central to her practice she navigates the tension between rigid and fluid structures, developing innovative silhouettes that challenge traditional construction while remaining adaptable to the human form.
BODIES OF QUISQUEYA
This collection looks to interpret the human form as a living cultural artifact, bridging the gap between ancestral heritage and contemporary identity. By drawing from the often overlooked traditions of the Taíno people and the modern craftsmanship from the Dominican Republic, I seek to reclaim a history that is frequently forgotten in the present day.
This explores the duality of "control" and "organic freedom," contrasting the precise, engineered structures of ceramic rims and handles against the fluid, expansive volumes of a vessel’s body.
Through this lens, the human form is elevated as a sacred container for memory, ensuring that cultural heritage is preserved as a living legacy rather than a forgotten artifact.
