Bio

Yuxin Chen is a senior fashion design student based in China. Her work explores the relationship between body and structure, moving beyond surface decoration. Influenced by origami, she transforms flat textiles into three-dimensional forms through folding and layering. Her designs emphasize controlled volume, movement, and spatial interaction, creating garments that extend and reshape the body while balancing minimalism with sculptural form.

SPIRAL SYNTAX

This collection explores the spiral as a structural system that reshapes the relationship between body and space. Garments act as spatial forms, extending and unfolding around the body rather than conforming to it.
Image: Inspired by origami, this work approaches folding as a method for generating space and reconfiguring relationships within a flat surface. Through draping and pattern experimentation, principles of rotation, layering, and transformation are translated into garments that evolve from line into volume, forming dynamic structures around the body.
Image: The process begins with paper structure experiments, using folding to explore how flat surfaces can generate volume. These studies are translated into pattern development through radial and directional lines, which guide the construction on fabric. Through muslin draping, the folds are refined to follow the body's form, creating a continuous spiral movement. The final garments emerge from this progression, maintaining the logic of the original paper structures while adapting to scale, material, and wearability.
Image: Volume expands from a single point on the body.
Translucent layers unfold in a controlled, spiral-like form.

Image: Spiral structures define both the bodice and skirt. The form flows from the upper body downward, guiding the silhouette through movement.
Image: A continuous structure wraps and moves around the body. Fluid motion is guided by precise construction.
Image: Structure becomes sharper and more defined. Contrasting elements frame and reshape the body.
Image: Light layers follow the body in motion.
The silhouette shifts with ease and fluidity.
