Bio
sueah whang is a new york based womenswear designer with a fine arts background.
her design language is guided by her inner child, inspired by how she imagined her older self dressing as a little girl. her work explores her convoluted feelings towards navigating womanhood and learning to unapologetically express her femininity. she aspires to challenge how women are perceived by society, being told to take up as little space as possible and cover up as much as possible, to fit a mold of outdated values.
'the green ribbon' follows a girl who
always wears a ribbon around her neck.
when she is on her deathbed,
she finally lets her partner
untie the ribbon,
as her head falls off.
in the story, jenny’s body becomes
a tool for patriarchal ownership
as alfred continues to cross her
boundaries while she repeatedly
tells him not to.
similar to the female experience,
the story encompasses the feeling
of uncertainty of transitioning
into womanhood while desperately
holding onto our girlhood.

the world of the green ribbon
is a romanticization of everything
i love and hate about being a girl.
it’s in opposition to the reinforced
rules of modesty and gender roles
we face as women,
and an admittance to the part i play
in conforming to these standards...
sometimes.
this collection is a celebration of
womanhood of all ages,
especially in times of change
and coming of age, to empower
women to feel free to inhabit their
bodies fully and authentically,
without fear or shame.
a love story
where finding love isn’t the focus.
