Bio

My name is Yrisa, and I'm designing a collection, "Sabores que Escucho," inspired by my synesthesia—my ability to taste sounds. I'm materializing the flavors I hear, blending people, places, and memories, into a visual symphony of constantly moving curves and shifting colors.

Since the fabric manipulations involved diverse textures and densities, integrating them into a cohesive structure was challenging. This difficulty extended to the final pieces, where the density was crucial to support the drapes. Maintaining the form while allowing natural flow required creative solutions.

I was fortunate to partner with Swarovski, using their embellishments instead of sewing to connect a piece. This taught me new, professional construction techniques, though I aim to work with industry professionals to further advance my skills.

As I delved deeper into literature, I learned that synesthesia occurs when the brain routes sensory information through multiple, unrelated senses. Specifically, I discovered that my type is known as lexical-gustative-synesthesia, which is when individuals perceive tastes when they hear or think about certain words or sounds.

This condition alters the brain’s processing of sensory input, causing activation of the auditory areas while simultaneously stimulating the gustatory regions.

Image: Through these pieces, I translated invisible sensory experiences into curved, textured forms that express the intimate relationship between sound, taste, memory and design.
Image: I searched for the color I saw when I was tasting a sound, to drape them. Using materials from my great aunt, from the 60's/70’s. I created curve shapes, inspired by my mother's body; to create the sole of my collection.
