Bio

Yufei Li is a fashion designer whose interests span the broader fields of art. In her work, she integrates artisanal techniques into thoughtful details, drawing inspiration from everyday life to create designs that are both approachable and refined. Across diverse approaches, she focuses on capturing the “unspoken struggles” of individuals, allowing these emotions to find acceptance and resolution. For her, fashion goes beyond adornment, becoming a medium that resonates with and speaks to people’s inner worlds.

The Holding Pieces

As an international student, I often experience a subtle disconnection between reality and memory. While studying in the United States, my life in China feels increasingly distant, yet when I return home, everything in the U.S. seems unreal, like a dream. This repeated shifting leaves me questioning where my real life exists and what defines “me,” a confusion that still lingers in my final year of study. This led me to create a project exploring studying abroad, disconnection, and acceptance, both as a continuation of my self-exploration and as comfort for those living between worlds.

Through reflective writing, personal photographs, surveys, and cultural research, I drew inspiration from geographical differences, shared metaphors, and the red thread motif symbolizing fate and connection. The project takes shape as a fashion collection of contrasting forms bound by red-thread stitches, alongside a digital fashion installation, expressing the idea that living pieces in different countries remain connected and continue to shape who we are.
